Suriya New Telugu, tamil film Singam movie review:

Suriya is one actor on a tough patch these days. With no clear-cut reason, the public loathe him and his movies. Even though he is a dedicated artist, he has become the target for mockery amongst the ‘big heroes’ club.
Come 2013, and we have Suriya joining hands with Hari for the fourth time, making way for Singam 2, the sequel to the highly impressive 2010 hit, Singam. Produced by Prince Pictures, it has Anushka, Hansika, Vivek, Santhanam, Rahman and Hollywood star Danny Sapani alongside Suriya. Music is by Devi Sri Prasad again, with cinematography by Priyan.

Story:

The film starts off from where the first part (Yamudu) ceased. An honest police officer Narasimham (Surya) is now working as NCC master at a school in Kakinada. He has another job as an undercover cop who tracks illegal activities at port in the town pretending that he is no longer with police department. Meanwhile, his girlfriend (Anushka) waits for him to come out from undercover cop activity and marry her. At school, a student (Hansika) falls in love with him but he dismisses her proposal. When he comes to know the nexus between a local mafia leader Bhai (Mukesh Rishi) and international African drug lord Danny (Danny Sapani) and gets enough evidence, he takes up charge again as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). Rest of the drama is how he brings the crime lord from Africa and puts him in Indian prison.

Artists Performance:

Surya looks absolutely fabulous in the role of DCP Narasimham. He livens up the scenes with his performance. It is his agility that adds charm to his character. He is aggressive, at the same time looks very handsome.

Anushka is enormously wasted. Hansika has better role in the film but she hardly has any chemistry with Surya. Santhanam provides some good laughs with dialogues like - Vayasulo Vunnappudu Figure Ravadam, Vayasu Aipoyaka Sugar Ravadam Sahajam. As villains Mukesh Rishi and Rehman are okay. As main villain African Danny looks menacing.

Technical and Other Departments:

The film has good mass dialogues penned by Shashank Vennelakanti. Music by Devi Sri Prasad is a big letdown. Cinematography (Priyan) is neat. Editor should have trimmed the film especially the second half. Fight sequences are nice.

Diretor Hari has the made the film in his usual style by infusing elements that appeal to mass audiences. Production values are decent.

Movie Analysis:

Hari directed Surya and Anushka starrer Yamudu ( Singam in Tamil) was a huge hit. The film was also remade successfully in Hindi. Three years later, the same team comes up this sequel - Singam aka Yamudu 2. While the original movie focused on a direct fight between a powerful bad man and an honest cop, the sequel's canvas is bigger. His mission is now getting down an international drug lord and showing the power of Indian Police. Thus the wafer thin storyline is stretched beyond limit. As a charged up cop, Surya with his performance glues us to the seats despite the bland story. It is a one man show.

Pre-interval episodes especially when Surya takes up the charge of DCP are good. Some action scenes in the second half are a treat watch.

A tighter version would have made a lot of difference. After some point, all we get to see is Surya's marathon run and his high pitched dialogues. Looking for emotional quotient in an action movie is like searching for river in a middle of the desert but the movie is completely devoid of moving moments. Also the romance between Anushka and Surya is appealing.

Final View:

Singam is typical police drama. It is Surya's show all the way with an overdose of action and noise. Lengthy second half, wafer thin storyline and lack of emotional drama are its major drawback. Despite this, Surya makes the movie watchable. Go for Surya!
