Lata Mangeshkar was born on September 28, 1929, in Indore in the Central Provinces (now Madhya Pradesh). She was the eldest daughter among the five sons Dinanatha and Shevanti Mangeshkar, who belonged to a Brahmin family Maharashtra.
Dinanath came from the town of Mangeshi to Goa and changed her last name from Haridkar to Mangeshkar to identify their hometown. Her father Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar was an accomplished classical singer and theater actor. Hema Lata was originally named when she was born, her father, but later renamed Lata, inspired by a character in one of her works.
She had four brothers, three sisters, Meena, Asha and Usha; and a brother, Hriddaynath. The five Mangeshkar brothers learned classical music from their father.
Lata Mangeshkar has had a brilliant career in various roles, better in some countries than in others. A gifted voice God has led her to become the most famous singer and female reproductive success of the 1940s to 1980 by Vaijayantimala Preity Zinta, lending her voice to all the great ladies of Bollywood.
Her songs have touched the hearts of millions over the years and across borders. She also acted early in her career. Her attempts as a music director were not as successful as her singing career.
Lata Mangeshkar began her career in 1942, shortly after her father’s death. Vinayak Damodar Karnataki, a friend of the family, helped her in acting in Hindi and Marathi films. The early years of her career were quite difficult, as young Lata struggled to gain a foothold in the industry.
Her first song as a playback singer was ‘NaachuYaa Gade Khelu Saari Mani House Bhaari’ for the Marathi movie Kiti Hasaal with the composer Sadashivrao Nevrekar. The song was removed from the movie before being released. Her first Hindi song came in the following year in 1943, with ‘Mata Ki Ek Duniya Badal De Tu Sapoot’ Gajaabhaau in the film.
Lata Mangeshkar moved to Mumbai in 1945. She faced many rejections by contemporary composers because her voice was too thin and strong, in contrast to the preferred style of the time. She has often imitated famous singers like Noor Jahan to satisfy music directors.
In addition to Maestro Vinayak Lata was led by music director Ghulam Haider. Under her leadership, her first Lataji achieved recognition in the song, Dil Mera All, Mujhe Na Kahin Ka Chhora ‘Majboor 1948. Her first success came with the tumultuous song “ayega anewala” displayed on the screen by an actress in the film Madhubala Mahal movie Year 1949.
Her musical career began from there, working with the leading music directors and singers of her time. She played songs for music directors such as Sachin Dev Burman, Salil Chowdhury, Shankar Jaikishan, Naushad, Madan Mohan, Kalyanji Anandji, Khayyam and Pandit Amarnath Bhagat Ram HusanLal.
In the 1950s she worked on cinema hits such as Baiju Bawra (1952), Mother India (1957), Devdas (1955), ChoriChori (1956) and Madhumati (1958). She won her first Filmfare Award for best singer of the game in 1958 for the film song “Aaja Re Pardesi, Madhumati with music director Salil Chowdhury.
Lata Mangeshkar began to produce reproductions for regional films in Tamil and Marathi. Her first Tamil song was “Enthan Kannalan” in Vanaradham film in 1956. In Marathi films, hermanoHridaynath sung for Mangeshkar, who was a famous music director, in Jait Re Jait films. She sang Bengali films that played for music directors like Salil Chowdhury and Hemant Kumar.
She made her debut in the Kannada industry to play the song of Lakshman Bellane Belagayithu Berlekar films Krantiveera sangolli rayanna 1967. Composed in 1974, she recorded for the film Nellu, Salil Chowdhury made her only Malayalam song “Kadali Chenkadali” and writing by Vayalar Ramavarma.
Lata Mangeshkar has also assumed the role of musical director of several films in Marathi, was the first Ram Ram Pavane in 1955. Other projects were Maratha Tituka Melvava (1963) Mohityanchi Manjula (1963) Sadhi Manase (1965) and Tambadi Mati (1969), She won the Best Music Director of the Government of Maharashtra for the film Sadhi Manase with the song “Airanichya Deva to record the prize for the best song.
Lata Mangeshkar has received numerous awards and honors for her illustrious career as a repro singer. Some of the prizes won by Padma Bhushan (1969), Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1989), Padma Vibhushan (1999), Maharashtra Bhushan Award (1997), NTR National Award (1999).
